Do You Have an Image Backup of Your PC?

Hanger & Associates, Inc. is now offering a new image backup service for your mission critical PCs.  This is a multi-step process.  The first step is to make a full image back up of your system to CD. This is an image or “picture?of your system at that point in time. In addition to the initial system image backup, we are suggesting that a minimum monthly data backup of your system be created. If your system should crash, i.e. hard drive crash, corrupted data, etc., we can then restore the image which would put your system back to the point in time of the initial system image backup and then we would restore the data from the last data backup. How does this differ from a regular backup? This will restore your hardware and software settings and any specialty programs that have been installed to your system, i.e. Reach, Bill Payers, Office Settings, any special use programs and settings, along with the directory structure.  Backups are necessary to have, but unlike DOS programs, just backing up the directory of a program is not complete enough to restore a program. You need the Windows registry with all the settings and the system.ini and win.ini files. An image will entail all of these necessary files and settings. Call us to discuss this process today.

Do you have the most current updates from Microsoft?

Microsoft is continuously updating and patching its software. Some people find that disturbing, that they continue to find “holes and “errors?in their software, but unfortunately, it’s the nature of the beast! It is a little unsettling that you purchase software that they find problems with, but keep in mind the fact that they are checking for these problems on a continuous basis. They offer these fixes and patches at no additional charge, it’s part of your original purchase price of the software.  But, they don’t automatically send them to you. You must get them on your own. Let Hanger & Associates check out each of your PCs and make sure all of your updates are current. This can usually be done within an hour per PC with a fast internet connection and there are no visual changes to the way your system operates. It all sits behind the scenes and does the work.

But be careful! We have received emails from “Microsoft?telling us to download the attachment for critical MS updates. But what this email really is turns out to be a virus. If you were to open the attachment on the email, it would place a virus or worm on your system and I think we all know what a problem that can become. Wouldn’t your anti-virus catch this virus? Well probably, if a couple of criteria have been met. First, you must have your virus scan enabled to check your email. Secondly, you must have the most current files with the fix for that virus downloaded for your anti-virus software. Let Hanger & Associates check out your critical updates to ensure that you have all the patches Microsoft has available. And while we’re there, we can verify your anti-virus settings on those PCs. Anti-virus software will do you absolutely no good without being kept current.

Today’s WWW Tip

I’ll just bet you get lots of emails that tell you to click to receive $100 from Bill Gates, or notification that Best Buy needs you to submit your credit card information to confirm a possibly fraudulent transaction. We’ve even gotten emails that are supposedly from Nigeria (and other countries) that offer you a chance to help them get $50 million out of their war-torn country and they will give you 5-10% of those funds for depositing money into a security fund for them. Now we all laugh and wonder who would be so gullible, but apparently there are plenty of people willing to help out those in need since these scams continue. If you are wondering if something you’ve heard or seen could be an urban legend, check out these sites?               snopes.com and scambusters.org

We all want to help those in need and a free coupon every now and then is great! But don’t?be taken in. Check out that rumor or that “too good to be true?email.

Gadget Review

You’ve heard of a floppy drive, a hard drive, a Jaz drive, an Orb drive, a Zip drive and a CD drive ?but have you heard of the newest portable drive ?the Jump drive? The jump drive or key chain drive is smaller than a lighter and can be hooked right onto your key chain, yet carries from 64MB up to a full 1 GB of data. For comparison, 256 MB of data is approximately 176 floppy disks. Now those won’t fit in your pocket!  This little piece of hardware plugs right into your USB port and is immediately recognized as an external drive ?just as if you have plugged in an external hard drive. The jump drive is great for transferring data to take home to work on your PC at home or to transfer data on your laptop. All you need is a USB port! Most operating systems won’t even need to download a driver for use! It’s amazing how much data can be packed into such a small case!

PC Tips

Have your noticed your Outlook or Outlook Express opening slower and slower? Have you emptied out your deleted messages lately? When you choose to delete a message, OE simply marks the original message as deleted without actually removing it. Start by right-clicking on the Deleted Items folder and emptying it. Then choose File | Folder | Compact All Folders to free up all the space occupied by those marked messages. If you never done this before and leave old, unneeded messages in your folders, emptying this folder can take quite a while. If you have Outlook, look under Tools | Empty Deleted Items Folder.

Afterward, OE may load noticeably faster!
